Performance Bosch M-Type Injection Pumps for Mercedes OM601, OM602, OM603, OM604, OM605 & OM606

High-performance mechanical diesel injection pumps with our own 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm pump elements

Einspritzpumpen Manufaktur NRW develops, rebuilds and calibrates performance-oriented mechanical Bosch M-type inline injection pumps for Mercedes-Benz diesel engines of the OM601, OM602, OM603, OM604, OM605 and OM606 families.

Our performance injection pumps are designed for applications ranging from responsive road engines and off-road vehicles to high-output OM605 and OM606 SuperTurboDiesel projects.

At the centre of our pump programme are our own specially selected and developed M-pump element configurations with:

7.0 mm pump elements

and

9.0 mm pump elements

The objective is not simply to deliver the largest possible quantity of fuel.

A properly built performance injection pump must deliver the required fuel quantity accurately, consistently and at the correct point within the available injection period.

For this reason, every performance pump is built and calibrated according to the actual engine and its intended application.

Mechanical Bosch M-Pump Performance

The Bosch M-type inline injection pump is an extremely compact and robust mechanical injection system.

Each engine cylinder has its own pumping element inside the injection pump.

The pumping element generates the pressure required for injection and meters the amount of fuel delivered to the corresponding injector.

For performance applications, the standard fuel delivery of the original pump can eventually become a limiting factor.

Increasing engine airflow with:

  • a larger turbocharger

  • higher boost pressure

  • improved intercooling

  • cylinder head modifications

  • increased engine displacement

does not automatically increase engine power.

The additional air must be matched by the correct amount of fuel.

This is where a properly developed performance injection pump becomes an essential part of the engine concept.

Our Own 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm M-Pump Elements

We use our own series of 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm pump elements for performance-oriented Bosch M-type injection pumps.

The element diameter is an important parameter because it influences the effective pumping area and therefore the potential fuel delivery during a given pump stroke.

However, element diameter alone does not determine the quality of a performance injection pump.

A successful pump element must also work correctly with:

  • filling characteristics

  • control edge geometry

  • effective delivery stroke

  • injection duration

  • pump cam profile

  • engine speed

  • governor operation

  • delivery valves

  • injectors

  • injection lines

For this reason, we do not describe an injection pump simply as a “7 mm pump” or “9 mm pump” and assume that the number alone defines its performance.

The complete pump must be engineered and calibrated as a system.

7.0 mm Performance M-Pump

Our 7.0 mm element configuration is intended for applications where substantially increased fuel delivery is required while retaining strong drivability and controllability.

Typical applications include:

  • performance road vehicles

  • Mercedes G-Class conversions

  • off-road vehicles

  • OM602 turbo conversions

  • OM603 performance engines

  • OM605 SuperTurboDiesel projects

  • OM606 performance engines

  • mechanically converted OM605 and OM606 applications

  • engines designed for strong low- and mid-range torque

Depending on the engine, turbocharger and pump configuration, the 7.0 mm element offers sufficient fuel potential for substantial performance increases beyond standard injection pump output.

For six-cylinder OM603 and OM606 applications, this configuration is particularly interesting where the objective is a powerful road engine rather than maximum possible fuel quantity.

The actual engine power cannot be determined by element diameter alone.

A 7.0 mm pump can be calibrated for very different applications.

The same basic element size can therefore be used for an engine requiring:

  • clean road behaviour

  • strong low-rpm torque

  • moderate peak fuel quantity

  • high-performance road use

  • increased engine speed

  • or a more aggressive performance calibration

The calibration determines how the available potential is used.

9.0 mm High-Flow M-Pump

Our 9.0 mm pump element configuration is designed for applications with significantly higher fuel demand.

This specification is intended primarily for serious high-performance engines where the fuel requirement moves beyond the normal operating range of smaller performance elements.

Typical applications include:

  • high-output OM605 engines

  • high-output OM606 engines

  • OM606 SuperTurboDiesel projects

  • large turbocharger applications

  • competition vehicles

  • motorsport

  • drift applications

  • drag-oriented diesel projects

  • high-displacement OM606 engines

  • our OM606 D35 LA 3.5-litre engine concept

  • other individual high-fuel-demand applications

For suitable six-cylinder engine combinations, the 9.0 mm system provides the basis for 500+ hp class applications and significantly higher fuel-demand engine concepts, provided that the remainder of the engine is capable of using the available fuel.

This does not mean that every 9.0 mm injection pump should be calibrated to maximum delivery.

The advantage of the larger element is the available delivery capacity.

The final fuel quantity can then be matched to the engine.

A 9.0 mm pump can therefore be calibrated below its theoretical maximum when the application requires better drivability, lower thermal loading or additional adjustment reserve.

Why Larger Pump Elements?

A diesel engine has only a limited amount of crankshaft rotation available for the injection event.

As engine speed increases, the actual time available for injection becomes progressively shorter.

This becomes particularly important in high-output mechanical diesel engines.

To produce additional power, more fuel must be injected.

If the required fuel quantity can only be delivered by extending the injection event excessively, combustion can continue too far into the expansion stroke.

This can contribute to:

  • high exhaust gas temperature

  • inefficient combustion

  • excessive smoke

  • reduced efficiency

  • increased thermal loading

A larger pumping element can potentially deliver a required quantity of fuel within a shorter effective pumping period.

This is one of the fundamental reasons why larger elements are valuable in high-performance mechanical diesel injection systems.

However, bigger is not automatically better.

The element must still provide sufficient control at:

  • idle

  • low load

  • part load

  • boost transition

  • full load

This is why element design and pump calibration are just as important as maximum fuel capacity.

7.0 mm or 9.0 mm – Which Pump Is Right for My Engine?

We do not select the pump element according to a single horsepower number.

Instead, we consider the complete engine specification.

7.0 mm

Typically suitable for:

  • street-oriented performance engines

  • strong daily drivers

  • moderate to high power increases

  • early torque development

  • off-road and G-Class applications

  • applications where controllability is a major priority

  • performance engines that do not require the maximum possible fuel quantity

9.0 mm

Typically suitable for:

  • very high-output diesel engines

  • large turbocharger systems

  • motorsport applications

  • OM606 engines with very high airflow

  • high-displacement OM606 engines

  • applications requiring very high fuel delivery

  • engine concepts in the 500+ hp class and beyond

  • projects where additional injection pump reserve is required

The correct choice depends on the individual engine.

Element Diameter Does Not Equal Horsepower

A common mistake in performance diesel tuning is to assign a fixed horsepower figure to a specific pump element diameter.

For example:

7 mm = X horsepower

or

9 mm = Y horsepower

This is technically too simple.

Engine power depends on the complete combination of:

  • number of cylinders

  • fuel quantity per cylinder

  • engine displacement

  • engine speed

  • injection duration

  • injection timing

  • injector nozzle

  • injector opening pressure

  • turbocharger

  • boost pressure

  • intake air temperature

  • exhaust back pressure

  • cylinder head airflow

  • exhaust gas temperature

  • combustion efficiency

A six-cylinder OM606 naturally has a different total fuel requirement from a four-cylinder OM601, even if both injection pumps use elements of the same diameter.

For this reason, we specify and calibrate every performance M-pump according to the actual engine.

Four-, Five- and Six-Cylinder M-Pumps

The Mercedes OM60x engine family includes different cylinder configurations.

Our performance pump work therefore includes configurations for:

Four-cylinder engines

OM601 and suitable OM604 conversion projects

Five-cylinder engines

OM602 and OM605

Six-cylinder engines

OM603 and OM606

The total fuel requirement changes according to cylinder count and engine displacement.

A pump specification developed for a six-cylinder OM606 cannot simply be transferred numerically to a four-cylinder engine.

Each pump must be considered individually.

Mercedes OM601 Performance Injection Pump

The OM601 is a compact four-cylinder member of the Mercedes OM60x diesel engine family.

For turbo conversions and other performance applications, the mechanical injection pump can become an important part of the engine configuration.

Depending on the project, we can rebuild and modify suitable M-type injection pumps with increased fuel delivery.

Possible applications include:

  • turbocharged OM601 engines

  • off-road conversions

  • lightweight performance vehicles

  • custom Mercedes diesel projects

The required pump specification depends on displacement, turbocharger and intended engine power.

Mercedes OM602 Performance M-Pump

The OM602 five-cylinder diesel engine is particularly suitable for mechanical performance applications.

Different versions of the OM602 have been used in passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and off-road applications.

For performance projects we can configure M-type injection pumps for:

  • standard-displacement OM602 engines

  • turbocharged OM602 engines

  • modified turbo systems

  • high-torque road engines

  • G-Class applications

  • off-road vehicles

  • individual performance builds

Our 7.0 mm elements are particularly interesting for strong street and torque-oriented OM602 applications.

For projects with substantially higher fuel demand, individual higher-capacity solutions can be considered.

Mercedes OM603 Performance M-Pump

The OM603 six-cylinder diesel engine is one of the classic platforms for mechanically controlled Mercedes diesel performance.

Its six-cylinder M-type injection pump provides an excellent basis for individually calibrated performance applications.

Depending on the project, we can configure OM603 pumps using our:

7.0 mm performance elements

or

9.0 mm high-flow elements

Applications range from responsive turbocharged road vehicles to substantially modified high-output diesel engines.

For an OM603 performance pump, we take into account:

  • standard or modified displacement

  • turbocharger size

  • desired boost response

  • required maximum fuel quantity

  • target engine speed

  • vehicle weight

  • transmission

  • intended road or competition use

Mercedes OM604 Mechanical Injection Pump Conversion

The OM604 requires special consideration.

Not every engine within the OM601–OM606 family was originally equipped with the same mechanical Bosch M-type injection system.

For suitable OM604 mechanical-conversion projects, an appropriate pump concept must therefore be selected according to the engine and installation.

This is not simply an injection pump rebuild.

A mechanical conversion requires consideration of:

  • pump compatibility

  • number of cylinders

  • mounting

  • pump drive

  • injection timing

  • governor configuration

  • throttle control

  • injector compatibility

  • required fuel delivery

OM604 projects are therefore evaluated individually.

Mercedes OM605 Performance M-Pump

The OM605 five-cylinder 20-valve diesel engine has become a popular platform for high-performance mechanical diesel conversions.

Depending on the original engine configuration, a mechanically governed M-type pump can be used or an appropriate mechanical conversion can be developed.

We build performance pump configurations for OM605 applications using our own element series.

Possible configurations include:

7.0 mm OM605 M-Pump

For responsive performance road engines, strong torque delivery and applications where good controllability remains important.

9.0 mm OM605 M-Pump

For engines with very high fuel demand, larger turbocharger systems and competition-oriented applications.

The injection pump is calibrated according to the five-cylinder engine configuration rather than simply using settings intended for an OM606.

Mercedes OM606 Performance M-Pump

The OM606 is one of the most internationally recognized platforms for mechanical high-performance diesel engines.

Originally produced in naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations, the OM606 is now widely used for:

  • performance road vehicles

  • Mercedes G-Class conversions

  • off-road projects

  • drift vehicles

  • motorsport

  • marine applications

  • custom engine conversions

  • SuperTurboDiesel builds

For suitable projects, we configure mechanical M-type pumps with our own:

7.0 mm pump elements

and

9.0 mm pump elements

The correct configuration depends on the desired engine characteristics.

7.0 mm OM606 M-Pump – Performance with Drivability

For many road-oriented OM606 builds, maximum fuel quantity is not the only objective.

A useful performance engine must also work at:

  • idle

  • low engine speed

  • light throttle

  • part load

  • boost transition

  • full load

Our 7.0 mm configuration is therefore especially interesting for OM606 engines where strong performance and good drivability must be combined.

Typical projects include:

  • Mercedes G-Class

  • W124 and S124 conversions

  • W201 projects

  • W202 projects

  • W210 conversions

  • W140 applications

  • off-road vehicles

  • street performance cars

  • turbo upgrades

The pump can be calibrated according to the actual air supply and engine concept.

9.0 mm OM606 M-Pump – Maximum Fuel Delivery Potential

For substantially more demanding OM606 builds, our 9.0 mm element configuration provides significantly greater fuel delivery potential.

This specification is designed for engines with:

  • high airflow

  • large turbochargers

  • substantial boost capability

  • reinforced internal components

  • high power targets

  • high engine speeds where appropriate

  • increased displacement

It is particularly relevant for serious 500+ hp OM606 engine concepts and other applications where the available fuel capacity of a smaller pump would become a limiting factor.

The final motor output is determined by the entire engine system, not by the injection pump alone.

OM606 D35 LA and 9.0 mm Mechanical Injection Pump

Our OM606 D35 LA represents a particularly demanding application for mechanical diesel injection.

By increasing the displacement of the standard OM606 into the approximately 3.5-litre class, the air and fuel requirements of the engine change significantly.

Depending on the desired power and torque characteristics, a suitable mechanical M-pump is developed as part of the complete engine concept.

Our 9.0 mm element configuration provides substantial fuel delivery reserve for high-output versions of this engine.

The injection pump is matched to:

  • increased engine displacement

  • turbocharger system

  • desired low-rpm torque

  • maximum engine output

  • engine speed range

  • vehicle application

Our OM606 D35 LA engine concept can be configured for output levels of up to approximately 750 hp and up to 1,450 Nm, depending on the complete engine specification.

The injection pump is only one part of this system.

Full Injection Pump Rebuild Before Performance Calibration

A performance injection pump should not be created by simply installing larger elements into a worn pump.

Before performance calibration, the condition of the entire pump must be considered.

Depending on the pump and condition, our work includes:

  • complete disassembly

  • cleaning

  • inspection

  • wear assessment

  • replacement of seals

  • inspection of bearings and bushings

  • inspection of pump camshaft and roller components

  • inspection of control mechanisms

  • installation of the required pump elements

  • assembly

  • governor adjustment

  • test bench calibration

The objective is a mechanically sound injection pump before increased performance is requested from it.

Test Bench Calibration

Every performance injection pump must be calibrated.

Installing larger elements without accurate test bench adjustment is not sufficient.

On the injection pump test bench we can evaluate and adjust important parameters such as:

  • fuel delivery

  • delivery balance between cylinders

  • idle delivery

  • part-load behaviour

  • full-load delivery

  • governor operation

  • maximum-speed behaviour

  • boost enrichment characteristics where applicable

Equal delivery between cylinders is particularly important.

If one cylinder receives significantly more fuel than another, the thermal and mechanical loading of the engine can become uneven.

For a high-performance diesel engine, accurate cylinder-to-cylinder fuel distribution is therefore fundamental.

More Fuel Is Not Automatically More Power

A diesel injection pump can only provide the fuel.

The engine must be able to use it.

If substantially more fuel is injected than the available air can burn efficiently, the result can be:

  • excessive smoke

  • very high exhaust gas temperature

  • increased thermal loading

  • reduced efficiency

  • unnecessary fuel consumption

For this reason, maximum pump delivery should not automatically be used.

The correct fuel quantity is the quantity the complete engine can use efficiently at the intended operating point.

Injection Pump and Turbocharger Must Match

The injection pump and turbocharger are directly connected through the combustion process.

Increasing fuel delivery increases exhaust energy.

This can accelerate turbocharger response.

However, excessive fuel before sufficient boost is available can produce unnecessary smoke and thermal loading.

The relationship between:

  • off-boost fuel

  • boost enrichment

  • turbocharger response

  • full-load fuel

  • engine speed

must therefore be calibrated according to the vehicle.

A heavy Mercedes G-Class requires a different fuel delivery characteristic from a drift vehicle or high-rpm competition car.

Boost Enrichment and ALDA Configuration

Where the pump configuration allows it, boost-dependent enrichment can be incorporated into the performance calibration.

The objective is to provide additional fuel as the engine receives additional air from the turbocharger.

Correct boost enrichment can help combine:

  • clean low-load operation

  • controllable off-boost behaviour

  • strong turbocharger response

  • increased fuel delivery under boost

The boost enrichment system must be adjusted as part of the complete pump calibration.

Simply maximizing boost enrichment is not the objective.

Governor Calibration

The governor is one of the most important components of a mechanical performance injection pump.

It influences how the pump reacts to:

  • throttle position

  • engine load

  • engine speed

For performance applications, the governor configuration can have a significant influence on how the engine feels in the vehicle.

Depending on the project, the desired characteristics may include:

  • smooth road behaviour

  • strong low-speed torque

  • rapid throttle response

  • increased usable engine speed

  • motorsport-oriented response

For this reason, governor calibration must match the intended application.

Maximum Engine Speed

A performance injection pump can be configured for a different operating range from a standard production pump where the overall engine concept permits this.

However, increasing injection pump governor speed does not automatically mean that the engine itself is mechanically suitable for higher rpm.

Maximum safe engine speed depends on components such as:

  • pistons

  • connecting rods

  • crankshaft

  • valve train

  • valve springs

  • lubrication

  • engine balancing

The injection pump should therefore be calibrated according to the mechanically permissible engine speed.

Injector Nozzles and Opening Pressure

A high-performance injection pump cannot be considered separately from the injectors.

The injectors determine how the fuel delivered by the pump enters the combustion chamber.

Depending on the engine concept, relevant parameters include:

  • nozzle condition

  • nozzle specification

  • opening pressure

  • spray pattern

  • leakage

  • consistency between cylinders

For demanding applications, injection pump and injectors should therefore be considered together.

We can inspect, rebuild and test the corresponding diesel injectors as part of the complete injection system.

Pump Delivery Is More Important Than Element Diameter Alone

When comparing performance injection pumps, the most useful question is not:

“How large are the elements?”

The more useful questions are:

How much fuel does the pump actually deliver?

At which pump speed?

How evenly is the fuel distributed between cylinders?

How does delivery behave from low speed to full load?

How is the governor calibrated?

How does the pump behave with boost?

Two pumps using elements with a similar nominal diameter can behave very differently depending on element geometry and calibration.

This is why our focus is on the measured performance of the complete injection pump.

Built for the Engine – Not for a Catalogue Number

We do not believe in one universal “performance pump” specification for every Mercedes OM60x engine.

The injection pump should match the actual project.

Before building a pump, the following information is particularly useful:

  • engine type

  • exact engine version

  • engine displacement

  • number of cylinders

  • naturally aspirated or turbocharged

  • turbocharger type

  • desired horsepower

  • desired torque characteristics

  • vehicle

  • vehicle weight

  • transmission

  • intended maximum rpm

  • road, off-road, towing or motorsport use

  • injector configuration

This information allows us to determine whether a 7.0 mm or 9.0 mm pump configuration is technically appropriate.

Performance M-Pumps for Road Cars

A road engine requires more than maximum fuel.

Good road behaviour means the engine must remain controllable during:

  • starting

  • idling

  • city driving

  • light throttle

  • constant-speed cruising

  • acceleration

  • full load

For road applications we therefore concentrate on creating a pump calibration that provides the required performance without sacrificing the entire low-load operating range.

This is particularly important for:

  • Mercedes G-Class vehicles

  • daily driven OM605 and OM606 conversions

  • classic Mercedes performance projects

  • long-distance vehicles

Performance M-Pumps for Off-Road and Mercedes G-Class

Heavy off-road vehicles benefit from strong and controllable torque rather than an injection pump designed solely for maximum high-rpm fuel quantity.

For G-Class and off-road projects, the calibration can therefore place greater emphasis on:

  • early torque

  • controlled boost enrichment

  • throttle modulation

  • usable low-speed performance

  • broad operating range

The injection pump specification must also take into account vehicle weight and drivetrain configuration.

Performance M-Pumps for Motorsport

Competition applications can require a significantly different injection pump configuration.

Depending on the application, priorities may include:

  • maximum fuel delivery

  • rapid response

  • high engine speed

  • aggressive governor characteristics

  • large turbocharger systems

  • maximum high-rpm power

These configurations are treated differently from road-oriented pumps.

A competition calibration is therefore not automatically the correct choice for a street vehicle.

Mechanical Conversion for OM605 and OM606

Many OM605 and OM606 performance projects are converted from electronically controlled fuel injection to a fully mechanical injection pump.

A mechanical conversion can be attractive for applications where:

  • simplified engine electronics are desired

  • the engine is installed in another vehicle

  • an off-road application requires a simple mechanical system

  • a classic vehicle receives an OM605 or OM606

  • an individual high-performance diesel engine is being built

However, the conversion must be correctly engineered.

The mechanical pump must be matched to:

  • engine

  • drive system

  • injection timing

  • throttle operation

  • turbocharger

  • intended fuel quantity

The result should be a complete functioning injection system rather than simply an injection pump physically attached to the engine.

Why Mechanical Injection?

Mechanical diesel injection continues to offer significant advantages for certain specialised engine projects.

These can include:

  • direct mechanical control

  • no electronic fuel ECU required for pump operation

  • straightforward diagnosis

  • individual mechanical calibration

  • suitability for engine swaps

  • suitability for off-road and special vehicles

  • high performance potential

For many OM605 and OM606 conversions, this combination of simplicity and performance is one of the main reasons for choosing a mechanical M-type pump.

Injection Pump Rebuild and Performance Upgrade in One Workshop

Our performance pump service combines two areas that should not be separated:

professional injection pump rebuilding

and

performance calibration

A worn injection pump does not become a good high-performance pump simply because large elements have been installed.

We therefore approach each pump as a precision mechanical assembly.

Our work can include:

  • complete overhaul

  • component inspection

  • replacement of worn parts

  • installation of our 7.0 mm or 9.0 mm elements

  • governor setup

  • boost enrichment configuration

  • full test bench calibration

  • cylinder-to-cylinder delivery balancing

  • calibration according to the customer's engine

Our 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm Pump Elements

The development and use of our own element configurations gives us the possibility to build injection pumps according to the performance range required by the project.

7.0 mm

Designed primarily for applications where increased performance must be combined with good fuel control and road usability.

9.0 mm

Designed for high-flow applications where significantly more delivery capacity is required.

The element is only the starting point.

The final quality of the pump depends on how the entire injection pump is built and calibrated around that element.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a performance M-pump for an OM606?

Yes.

We build mechanically governed performance injection pumps for OM606 applications using our own 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm element configurations.

Which pump element is best for an OM606?

That depends on the engine.

For many road-oriented performance engines, 7.0 mm offers a very useful performance range.

For very high-output applications with substantially higher fuel demand, our 9.0 mm elements provide additional delivery capacity.

Can a 9.0 mm OM606 pump support more than 500 hp?

Our 9.0 mm configuration is intended for high-fuel-demand engine concepts, including suitable six-cylinder applications in the 500+ hp class and beyond.

Actual engine output depends on the complete engine, turbocharger, injectors and calibration.

Does a 9.0 mm pump always inject more fuel than a 7.0 mm pump?

It has significantly greater theoretical delivery potential, but the actual fuel quantity is determined by the calibration.

A large element does not have to be operated at maximum delivery.

Can you build a mechanical pump for an OM605?

Yes.

Five-cylinder performance pump configurations for OM605 applications can be built and calibrated according to the engine specification.

Can you modify an OM602 or OM603 pump?

Yes.

OM602 and OM603 M-type injection pumps can be rebuilt and performance-calibrated depending on pump type and condition.

Can an OM604 be converted to mechanical injection?

Suitable OM604 mechanical-conversion projects can be evaluated individually.

The conversion requires more than simply changing the injection pump and must be assessed according to the engine and installation.

Do you calibrate the injection pump on a test bench?

Yes.

Performance injection pumps are calibrated and the delivery of the individual pumping sections is balanced on the injection pump test bench.

Can you also rebuild the injectors?

Yes.

The injection pump and injectors can be treated as a complete diesel injection system.

Do I need to send my existing injection pump?

A suitable customer pump can be used as the basis for an upgrade after inspection.

Availability of complete exchange or replacement pump configurations depends on the required pump type and current stock.
